Yes, Paperless-ngx is open source under the GPL-3.0 license. There are no license costs for operation. Costs only arise for hardware or hosting, storage space, and optional managed hosting. Paperless-ngx runs on Linux – ideally in Docker containers. For small to medium installations, moderate resources are sufficient. With higher document volumes and lots of OCR processing, adequate storage space, RAM/CPU, and stable storage are important. If you use our managed hosting, we handle the entire setup and dimension the infrastructure according to your needs.
Documents can be imported in various ways: via drag-and-drop through the web interface, through a monitored hotfolder (consume folder), via email import, or manually. After import, Paperless-ngx automatically performs OCR, classification, and storage – including metadata and archive version in PDF/A format.
Thanks to OCR and full-text indexing, documents can be searched not only by filename but also by their content. Additionally, tags, document types, correspondents, dates, and other metadata can be used to filter files specifically.
