What does server monitoring cost? Licenses, platform, people and response honestly calculated

"What does server monitoring cost?" sounds like a question with a single number as the answer. In reality it is four questions: What does the license cost, what does the platform cost, what do the people cost, and what does responding to alerts cost? This article delivers the price anchors for all four items (as of July 2026) - with clearly labeled experience values where no list prices exist. The four cost categories

1. License or subscription: What the vendor charges - from 0 euros for open source up to five-figure yearly amounts for commercial products.
2. Platform: Server or VM, storage for the metric history, backup - paid by you when self-hosting, included in the subscription with SaaS.
3. People: Setup, template maintenance, threshold tuning, updates, onboarding new systems. The most frequently underestimated item.
4. Response: Who reacts to the alert at three in the morning? On-call duty is often more expensive in the total bill than all other items combined.

Important for budget planning: depending on the model, the four items only shift around - none of them disappears. SaaS bundles license and platform into one subscription, managed models additionally take over maintenance and, if you wish, the response. Price anchors: the market overview

The list prices of the relevant providers (as of July 2026):

Three observations on this table. First: the entry prices look harmless, but the models scale differently - Datadog Pro already costs $1,500 per month at 100 hosts, i.e. $18,000 a year. Second: Zabbix Cloud does not charge per host but by NVPS (new values per second) - if you monitor many hosts sparingly, that works out cheaper than a per-host model. Self-hosting: what the platform costs

When self-hosting, the license disappears, but you pay for the platform. The official Zabbix requirements set the frame (documentation): a small environment with around 1,000 monitored metrics gets by with 2 CPU cores and 8 GB RAM; a large installation with around 100,000 metrics demands 16 cores and 64 GB RAM. Roughly derived, that means: for small and medium environments, a VM in the range of about 10 to 30 euros per month at European providers is sufficient; the large configuration lands, as a dedicated machine, roughly in the range of 100 to 200 euros per month - each plus storage for the history and plus backup.

Two items tend to get forgotten here: the database grows with every retained metric, and anyone who takes monitoring seriously wants it highly available - the monitoring must not go down together with the things it is supposed to watch. HA approximately doubles the platform costs. If your environment runs on Proxmox, the hypervisor itself belongs in the monitoring too: Monitor Proxmox with Zabbix.

The underestimated item: people

There are no list prices here, so we label this clearly for what it is: experience values from our customer projects at WZ-IT, not a study. In our experience, setting up production-grade monitoring - server, templates, alerting, dashboards - costs 2 to 5 person-days. Ongoing maintenance runs at 2 to 6 hours per month, depending on the size of the environment: tuning thresholds, applying updates, onboarding new hosts, reducing alert noise.

Those hours are not optional polish. Monitoring that nobody maintains decays measurably: triggers go stale, false alarms pile up, the team mutes the notifications - and the one real alert drowns in the noise. If you do not budget the maintenance hours, in a year you will not have monitoring, you will have an alibi installation.

That leaves response: an alert without a recipient is worthless. If someone is supposed to react at night and on weekends, you need an on-call rotation - in staffing and labor-law terms the most expensive building block of the total bill, and for small teams often simply not feasible.

Three paths, one budget

The four cost categories translate into three realistic procurement paths:

• Everything in-house: 0 euros license (Zabbix), platform from roughly 10 to 30 euros per month, plus the person-days and maintenance hours mentioned above. Cheap in money, expensive in time - and the response question stays open.
• SaaS: License and platform bundled in the subscription (Zabbix Cloud, Datadog, Site24x7), but the substantive maintenance - which checks, which thresholds, which escalation - stays with you, as does the response.
• Monitoring as a service: Platform and maintenance sit with the provider, alerts go to your team - or, if you wish, the provider takes over the response as well.
