Setup and maintenance
Scope, schedule, encrypted repositories with BorgBackup, restic or Proxmox Backup Server depending on the use case; databases via consistent dump.
Monitoring of every run
Monitoring runs 24/7: failed or missed runs trigger an alert.
Retention
Daily, weekly and monthly versions; 250 GB per server included, backup storage adjustable as needed.

Managed backup for Linux servers with restore testing
We set up the backup of your Linux servers, monitor every run and, where agreed, regularly check that the data can be restored. The result is recorded in a report.
- 24/7 monitoring
- Restore test where agreed
- Offsite where agreed
- Immutable after review
Starting point
A backup only counts once the restore works
Many backups run for years without anyone trying a restore. Errors then only surface in an emergency.
Failed runs go unnoticed
A full disk or expired credentials stop the backup. Without monitoring, this is often noticed weeks later.
Restore never tested
Missing directories, inconsistent database dumps or lost keys only show up during a restore.
Backup in the same place as the data
If the backup sits on the same host or in the same account, an outage or an attack hits both at once.
Deletable with the server credentials
Whoever takes over the server can delete a backup the server has full write access to, using the same credentials. Separate permissions and immutable backups protect against this.
Services
What managed backup covers
Backup up to 250 GB per server is part of server management; testing and extra protection are agreed separately. Not included: workstations, Microsoft 365, Windows servers, disaster recovery with a standby system.
Regular restore
Into a separate environment at the agreed frequency, without touching production.
Test criteria
Files complete, database starts, application responds; no content checks of the data.
Report
Date, version, duration, result and deviations; evidence for auditors or customers.
Offsite copy
Second copy at a separate location or with another provider, with its own credentials.
Immutable backup
With S3 Object Lock or an append-only repository; method and period after review.
Recovery targets
RPO and RTO on request; restore testing measures the actual recovery time.
Process
From current state to a verified backup
Four steps before the first restore test is on record.
- 01
Assess current state
Which servers, data and databases are backed up, how long versions are kept and what is already in place.
- 02
Set up backup
Repository, encryption, schedule and retention; keys are stored separately from the server.
- 03
Connect monitoring
Every run reports its result to 24/7 monitoring. Alerts follow the agreed paths.
- 04
First restore test
Where restore testing is agreed, the first restore proves the backup is complete. The agreed frequency follows.
For each test, the report shows which version was restored, how long it took and whether the agreed criteria were met.
- Versionnightly backup
- Databasestarts · tables complete
- Durationmeasured against RTO
Pricing
What managed backup costs
Extra protection and storage are priced by data volume.
Onboarding typically starts within 1 to 2 business days after signing
- Bank transfer
Comparison
Backup software, backup storage or managed backup
Software and storage alone do not secure operations. The difference lies in who monitors runs and tests restores.
| Task | Run software or storage yourself | Managed Backup (WZ-IT) |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Your team | WZ-IT |
| Run monitoring | Your team, if set up | 24/7 monitoring with alerts |
| Restore testing | rarely or never | at the agreed frequency with a report |
| Offsite and immutability | your own planning | set up after technical review |
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most important questions
- With managed backup, also called backup as a service, a service provider sets up the data backup, monitors every run, maintains retention and regularly checks that data can be restored. At WZ-IT this covers Linux servers on your infrastructure: servers and provider account remain yours.
- Yes. Linux server management includes backup management with 250 GB of backup storage per server; storage can be adjusted as needed. This page describes what that covers and which services can be agreed in addition: regular restore testing with a report, an offsite copy, longer retention and immutable backups.
- We restore a backup into a separate environment, not onto the production system. We then check the agreed criteria, for example whether files are complete, whether a database starts or whether an application responds. Result, duration and deviations are recorded in the report. Scope and frequency are defined in the proposal.
- An immutable backup cannot be changed or deleted within a defined period, not even with the credentials of the backed-up server. Technically this is possible with S3 Object Lock at the storage target, for example. An append-only repository prevents deletion through the server's backup access but does not replace a retention lock. The right method depends on the storage target and is reviewed before the proposal.
- Every backup run reports its result to monitoring. Monitoring runs 24/7; a missed or failed run triggers an alert. The response follows the agreed service level; a failed backup is usually not a P1 incident as long as the system itself is running.
- Depending on the use case we use BorgBackup, restic or Proxmox Backup Server with encrypted repositories. For Proxmox environments there are also separate services around Proxmox Backup Server. We take over an existing tool if it meets the requirements.
- Backup management with up to 250 GB per server is part of server management (from €149.90 excl. VAT / server and month). Restore tests, offsite copies and immutable backups are priced in the proposal according to data volume and frequency. Individual tasks such as a one-off restore are billed at the support rate of €120 excl. VAT / hour.

Networking & Provisioning
WZ-IT moved our studio infrastructure from decentralised individual devices to a central platform: every site is securely connected via VPN, new devices are onboarded automatically and an entire site is provisioned from a template, without manual steps on location. What impressed me most is the breadth and depth of their knowledge: Timo and Robin are not a typical IT provider who sets up a server and leaves. The two of them think their way into highly complex infrastructure and software topics, work through every requirement we put in front of them, and build networking, provisioning and operations so that everything fits together in the end. WZ-IT is an excellent partner for complex software, network and architecture projects.
