STRATO SERVER MANAGEMENT

Managed STRATO servers: Linux administration and operations

We take over suitable existing STRATO Linux servers after a technical audit. Your account and provider contract remain yours while operations, monitoring, and responsibilities are clearly defined.

Service scope

Monitoring or full operations

Monitoring Only from €79.90Server operations from €149.90

With Monitoring Only, alerts go to your team; response by WZ-IT is not included. Your servers remain in your provider account. The first managed Linux server starts at €149.90; progressive volume pricing applies from the second server.

Operational takeover

Move existing STRATO systems into controlled operations

Before takeover, we assess operating system, access, services, backup capability, and replacement needs. Suitable systems remain in place while technical debt receives a prioritised action plan.

Account remains yours

The provider contract, billing, and ownership of the systems remain with the client.

Assess condition first

Versions, exposed services, backups, storage, and previous maintenance paths are reviewed before standard operations.

Operations over one-off support

Patching, monitoring, backup control, and response follow an ongoing contract rather than unplanned ad-hoc work.

Service scope

Operate STRATO Linux servers with clear responsibility

The exact scope depends on server product, operating system, and existing applications.

System administration

Manage Linux, users, SSH, firewall, packages, and services under a documented scope.

Patching and upgrades

Prepare security updates and planned version changes with maintenance windows and fallback options.

Monitoring and response

Monitor host, services, resources, and certificates and respond according to the service level.

Backup control

Review existing backups or add a suitable external backup path.

Provider coordination

Coordinate hardware and network issues with STRATO where provider action is required.

Migration when required

Move systems that are no longer viable to new infrastructure in a controlled way.

STRATO service areas

Which STRATO systems we take over and operate over time

STRATO provides the booked server infrastructure. Following a technical audit, WZ-IT takes over the agreed operations scope for Linux, services, applications, monitoring, and recovery in the existing customer account with documented responsibilities.

01VPS & dedicated servers

Move STRATO Linux servers into controlled operations

We take over suitable virtual and dedicated Linux servers from inventory through ongoing operations. The deciding factor is not the product label, but whether operating system, access, and applications can be operated reliably.

Responsibility boundary

STRATO operates the booked hosting and hardware foundation. Root access, operating system, installed software, and their secure operation remain customer duties until WZ-IT explicitly takes them over.

Specific scope

  • Inventory server product, operating system, resources, and installed services
  • Linux hardening, users, SSH, firewall, and documented administration access
  • Operating-system and security updates in coordinated maintenance windows
  • Operate agreed web servers, reverse proxies, databases, and container workloads
  • Review capacity and lifecycle based on the actual system state

Outcome

A documented server estate with a known state, controlled changes, and a reliable operating path.

02Networking & access

Secure administrative and application access in a controlled way

Public servers need a clear separation between application access, administration, and internal communication. We reduce exposed attack surfaces and connect systems to a wider network architecture where required.

Responsibility boundary

The provider supplies networking and IP functions. Which services are reachable, who can administer them, and how other sites connect must be designed in the customer scope.

Specific scope

  • Review firewall rules and ports with documented inbound and outbound connections
  • Administrative access through SSH keys, bastion, VPN, or existing identities
  • Monitor TLS, certificate renewal, DNS dependencies, and reverse-proxy paths
  • Site-to-site or overlay connectivity to sites, Proxmox, and other clouds
  • Separate operating identities and traceable escalation paths for WZ-IT

Outcome

Explainable access paths instead of accumulated firewall exceptions and permanently exposed administration ports.

03Applications & platforms

Treat web stacks, containers, and panels as explicit scopes

STRATO servers often run several technical layers. We separate Linux operations, control panel, application, database, and third-party software so updates and incidents do not fall between responsibilities.

Responsibility boundary

Server management does not automatically include every installed application. WZ-IT documents which layers are operated and which release or product duties remain with the customer.

Specific scope

  • Apache, Nginx, Caddy, PHP, databases, and runtimes under the agreed scope
  • Docker and Compose stacks with volumes, secrets, proxies, and reproducible deployment
  • Plesk and other panels after version, licence, and extension assessment
  • Application updates for explicitly agreed standard applications
  • Separate software development, vendor support, and ongoing platform operations

Outcome

An operating scope that does not treat host, platform, and application as an undefined bundle.

04Backup & recovery

Take backups beyond the server into a recovery process

Backups are aligned with data storage and restart requirements. We assess existing protection, add a separate target where appropriate, and document recovery of the relevant services.

Responsibility boundary

An existing backup function does not prove recoverability. Data consistency, emergency access, and the actual restore must be assessed separately.

Specific scope

  • Assess backup jobs, retention, encryption, and failure domains
  • Application-consistent protection for databases and stateful services
  • External or separate backup targets according to risk and recovery requirements
  • Monitor jobs, capacity, and failed backup runs
  • Restore tests and alignment of RPO, RTO, and restart sequence

Outcome

A traceable recovery path that is not designed for the first time during an outage.

05Takeover & migration

Stabilize the estate and replace systems that are no longer viable

We do not take over existing STRATO environments blindly. Risks are prioritized, contained, and then moved either into regular operations or into a planned migration.

Responsibility boundary

Obsolete or undocumented systems are not accepted unchanged into normal SLA operations. Transitional operation and migration receive their own transparent scope.

Specific scope

  • Audit versions, exposed services, access, backups, and technical dependencies
  • Prioritized action plan for critical gaps and overdue maintenance
  • Onboard monitoring, documentation, and coordinated service levels
  • Migrate to new STRATO resources, another provider, or owned infrastructure as required
  • Technically isolate and coordinate required STRATO support cases

Outcome

A defensible choice between continued operation, modernization, and migration, with controlled responsibility for the chosen path.

Responsibility

Who is responsible for what at STRATO?

STRATO provides the booked server and network infrastructure. For servers with root access, the operating system, applications, and operational controls require separate ownership.

Your responsibility at STRATO

  • Operating system, users, SSH, firewall, and installed software on servers with root access
  • Monitoring of the virtual machine and the services running on it
  • Backup design, retention, and application-level recovery
  • Maintenance of custom containers, databases, panels, reverse proxies, and access rules
  • Definition of maintenance windows, recovery objectives, and escalation contacts

What we take over

  • Documented operational takeover for agreed Linux servers and services
  • Patching, hardening, and maintenance in coordinated windows
  • 24/7 monitoring and response according to the selected service level
  • Backup control and restore tests according to the agreed scope
  • Incident analysis and technical coordination of required STRATO tickets
One operating model

One operating model for STRATO and additional systems

The provider is only one operating location. WZ-IT connects servers, clouds, and on-premises systems into a documented environment with consistent monitoring, controlled access, and one coordinated service level.

Location and control

Contracts, accounts, and administrative control remain with you. We take over the agreed technical operations without moving the infrastructure into a closed hosting product.

Private connectivity

NetBird, WireGuard, or existing site connections integrate further clouds, Proxmox systems, and on-premises networks through controlled paths.

Operations and response

Monitoring, updates, backups, documentation, and incident response are designed across all participating systems and operated according to the selected service level.

Suitability

Not every existing server should continue unchanged

Outdated operating systems, unknown applications, or missing recovery paths are not silently accepted into standard operations. We first document risks and appropriate actions.

Frequently asked questions about STRATO server management

Takeover, operations, and migration of existing systems

Yes, when operating system, access, and applications are operable after the technical audit.

Yes. Provider contract and billing remain with the client while WZ-IT takes over the agreed technical operations.

We document the risk and plan a controlled upgrade, transitional hardening, or migration depending on the system.

Plesk and other panels are assessed by version, licence, and configuration and must be explicitly included in scope.

Monitoring agreed backup jobs is part of operations. Storage location, retention, and restore tests are defined for the system.

Yes. Suitable STRATO systems can join a hybrid environment through private VPN or overlay networks.

Yes, where access and support channels permit. The underlying hardware service remains the provider's responsibility.

When operating system, hardware, networking model, or applications can no longer be operated securely and economically.

Yes. Production or Critical can add round-the-clock P1 response for technically onboarded production systems. Response time is not a guaranteed resolution time.

Yes, when these layers are captured in the audit and explicitly included in operations. Product development and major version migrations remain separate services.

Yes. Related servers are documented as one customer environment, monitored together, and escalated under the agreed service level.

No. It is an ongoing operating model with monitoring, maintenance, backup control, and managed response. One-time assessments start with the server audit.
