Prepare the decision: Assess multi-cloud operations. Arrange a consultation.
A Hetzner alternative makes sense when another provider offers a specific required building block or a more suitable operating model. Searching for “Hetzner alternatives Germany” does not yet provide a complete requirements list. This comparison places five candidates in context and separates switching providers from adding operational support. As of October 2026. It contains no original benchmarks, test reports or universal ranking.

Identify the reason for a Hetzner alternative
Start with the reason: a missing platform service, desired region, contractual provision or operational staffing? Describe the missing property so that it can be checked later. “More performance” is not a sufficient criterion; a documented application limit and a suitable acceptance test provide a basis.
Our recommendation is a short decision list: mandatory criteria, requirements that can change and existing strengths of the design. This prevents a new provider closing one gap while leaving access, networking or recovery unresolved.
Also distinguish cloud servers, physical dedicated servers and managed platform services. The Hetzner overview describes cloud servers; the netcup product overview distinguishes VPS and Root Servers. Both VPS and Root Servers are virtual servers at netcup. “Root” does not establish an exclusive physical machine.
Five alternatives by required building block
Candidates are organised by documented product building blocks. The assessment task is our recommendation, not a vendor commitment or an exhaustive evaluation of its portfolio.
| Candidate | Documented building block | When we would include it in the selection |
|---|---|---|
| IONOS | Managed PostgreSQL | When managed PostgreSQL should be part of the target architecture |
| STACKIT | PostgreSQL Flex | When assessing a managed PostgreSQL path including extensions and access |
| OVHcloud | Managed Kubernetes | When a managed container platform is required beyond server provisioning |
| Scaleway | Managed PostgreSQL and MySQL | When one of these database products fits application requirements |
| netcup | VPS and Root Servers | When comparing virtual servers against specific resource and contract requirements |
This list does not imply that other providers fundamentally lack these functions. It defines traceable starting points for selection. Match the properties actually required against the relevant product specification afterwards.
Include the existing provider too. If Hetzner meets the requirements and the only gap is responsibility for server operations, management of existing servers may fit. A new platform does not resolve a missing operational agreement by itself.
Compare servers and platform services separately
Matching RAM figures do not compare the entire operating model. We recommend a framework with four levels:
| Level | Record for each candidate |
|---|---|
| Resources | Required architecture, CPU allocation, RAM, storage and network requirements |
| Platform | Database, container runtime, object storage and required interfaces |
| Responsibility | Who patches, monitors, backs up and responds to which incident |
| Contract | Region, billing, cancellation, support scope and documented limits |
Record what the vendor product includes and what your team or a commissioned service provider handles. Managed databases are specific products, not a synonym for complete application management. The overall design should have separate acceptance points for application behaviour, database access and recovery.
We omit arbitrary starting-price tables: without identical resource requirements, contract scope and operating models, they would suggest comparability that has not been established. For an actual selection, we recommend dated quotations based on the same requirements list. This article claims neither specific savings nor higher speed.
Check the actual location and contract scope
“Germany” in a search query is a requirement for the actual selection, not a property of every product from a provider. Hetzner, for example, documents locations in Germany, Finland, the USA and Singapore. Hetzner locations.
Record the primary region, backup destination, access path and contractual counterparty separately. Have privacy and contractual requirements assessed for the selected product. This comparison derives no blanket compliance statement from a European brand name.
Plan multi-cloud as an operational responsibility
Multiple providers initially mean multiple environments. Our planning recommendation is to name each environment’s purpose explicitly: production operations, off-site backup, an additional application location or a separate development project. Distribution without a target design is not a recovery plan.
Define the authoritative source, permitted write paths and restart process for each dataset. Document network connections, name resolution, identities, logging and alert paths across provider boundaries. A common dashboard can represent those decisions; it does not replace them.
For failure scenarios, we also recommend an acceptance list: who authorises switching? What data loss is acceptable? How will a return migration be reconciled? Which dependencies remain at the original provider? Without answers, “multi-cloud” should not be used as an availability commitment.
Decide between migration and operational support
We recommend three possible outcomes instead of a compulsory migration:
- Add management to the existing design when resources and functions fit but responsibilities are missing.
- Add an individual building block when, for example, a validated database product is needed and a split design can be justified.
- Plan a migration when requirements cannot be met at the existing destination and the new path can pass functional acceptance.
Before switching, describe data export, permissions, recovery and the return path. This also applies to a virtual server with similar specifications. For the decision record, compare one-off changes, transitional operations and ongoing target operations without unconfirmed savings figures.
Our approach at WZ-IT
Server management addresses existing Linux servers. Multi-Cloud Operations is the entry point for joint operations across cloud, bare metal and on-premises. The Hetzner operations page provides the provider-specific entry point.
Useful enquiry information includes the current provider, servers and services, desired regions, unresolved operational tasks and the reason for considering a move. Scope and responsibilities are clarified before takeover. This article establishes no new response, availability or partnership commitments.
