Managed IONOS

IONOS infrastructure with clear operating responsibility

IONOS provides several server and cloud product models. WZ-IT maps the workload to an appropriate product and takes over agreed duties from operating system and networking to monitoring, backup management, and incident response.

Data Center Designer (DCD)

For IONOS Cloud environments, we design and configure servers, Cubes, NICs, LANs, storage, and firewall rules in the DCD or through APIs.

Appropriate IONOS product

VPS, Cloud Cubes, Cloud Servers, and Dedicated Servers use different resource and management models. We assess suitability against the workload.

Backup and recovery

We manage agreed IONOS backup plans or integrate a separate backup target. Retention and recovery tests follow the agreed RPO, RTO, and scope.

Which IONOS products we design, integrate, and operate

IONOS VPS, IONOS Cloud, and dedicated servers are different product families. We therefore name the exact product scope and do not imply that features available only in the Data Center Designer or individual cloud services apply everywhere.

01Compute & DCD

Operate Compute Engine, Cubes, and virtual data centers

For IONOS Cloud, we structure resources in the Data Center Designer and operate the agreed Linux and application scope. VPS and dedicated servers are treated separately.

Responsibility boundary

IONOS operates the relevant platform. The guest operating system, DCD configuration, data, and applications remain customer responsibilities unless WZ-IT explicitly takes them over.

  • Select Dedicated Core Servers, vCPU Servers, and Cubes by workload and scaling model
  • Structure Virtual Data Centers, NICs, LANs, images, and Block Storage in the DCD
  • Take over VPS and Dedicated Servers following a product-specific assessment
  • Operate Linux hardening, updates, Docker, reverse proxies, and agreed services
  • Use the Cloud API, SDKs, or Terraform for repeatable changes

Outcome

A documented compute scope without mixing VPS, IONOS Cloud, and dedicated-server capabilities.

02VDC Networking

Design LANs, firewalls, load balancers, and VPN in the VDC

We combine IONOS network services into a traceable access and traffic-flow model while respecting their product-specific constraints.

Responsibility boundary

DCD firewalls and Network Security Groups do not automatically replace local hardening or application-level access controls. Rules and traffic flows remain subject to documentation.

  • Private and public LANs, IP addresses, IP Failover, and Cross Connect
  • NIC-based Firewall, Network Security Groups, and Flow Logs
  • Managed NAT Gateway plus Managed Network and Application Load Balancers
  • VPN Gateway using IPsec or WireGuard for sites and additional VDCs
  • Integrate Cloud DNS, certificates, and administrative access into operations

A VDC network architecture with defined segments, access paths, and external connections.

03Kubernetes & data

Operate Managed Kubernetes and Data Services around the application

With managed services, IONOS operates parts of the platform. WZ-IT covers cluster integration, workloads, data access, and remaining operating duties by scope.

Responsibility boundary

A managed control plane or database does not remove responsibility for networking, data, permissions, capacity, and application behavior.

  • Managed Kubernetes clusters, node pools, maintenance windows, and upgrades
  • Private Container Registry, deployments, ingress, secrets, and observability
  • PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, and In-Memory DB after product and edition review
  • Connect Object Storage and Network File Storage to applications
  • Treat Event Streams for Apache Kafka as a separate platform scope

Outcome

A clear split between provider operation, WZ-IT duties, and application-team responsibility.

04Monitoring & recovery

Fit IONOS Monitoring, Logging, and Backup into operations

Native services can provide the technical foundation. We define checks, alert paths, retention, and restore procedures around the application.

Responsibility boundary

An enabled service guarantees neither application-consistent protection nor human response. Both must be agreed in the operating and service-level scope.

Products and operating tasks

  • Complement Monitoring Service and Logging Service with WZ-IT service checks
  • Configure Backup Service for suitable resources and control its jobs
  • Map Block Storage snapshots and Object Storage to recovery objectives
  • Include Certificate Manager and SSH Key Manager in access and certificate processes
  • Document restore tests, RPO, RTO, and incident procedures

Outcome

Measurable operating states and a tested recovery path instead of isolated cloud features.

05Takeover & migration

Structure and evolve existing IONOS environments

We start with the existing account and assess product selection, DCD, access, cost, and technical dependencies before recommending changes or migrations.

Responsibility boundary

Provider, product, or architecture changes are not recommended by default. Risk, dependencies, recoverability, and operating cost determine the path.

  • Inventory contracts, VDCs, servers, networks, and data paths
  • Onboard monitoring, backup, maintenance windows, and documentation
  • Migrate between VPS, IONOS Cloud, Dedicated, or external providers
  • Review capacity, cost, and lifecycle using actual utilization
  • Coordinate provider tickets with measurements and technical isolation

A traceable action plan for stabilization, operations, and migration where appropriate.

Responsibility

What IONOS does not cover - and we do

For self-managed IONOS servers, the customer generally remains responsible for the operating system, applications, and operational controls. WZ-IT takes over the agreed portion.

Your responsibility at IONOS

  • Root access comes with operating responsibility: for self-managed servers, configuration, hardening, and updates remain with the customer. IONOS outlines the product models on its Linux server overview.
  • Backup products provide capabilities; backup plans, retention, job control, and recovery procedures must fit the application.
  • Service monitoring and human response to alerts must be organized separately for self-managed systems.
  • DCD, operating-system, and application changes require coordinated ownership and documented rollback paths.

What we take over

  • Patching and updates in coordinated maintenance windows
  • Security hardening and a documented access model
  • Monitoring; response according to the selected service level
  • Backup management and recovery tests according to the agreed scope
  • Incident handling including ticket coordination with IONOS

Plan DCD, server operations, and applications together

The Data Center Designer represents IONOS Cloud resources. Production use also requires defined ownership for the operating system, application, monitoring, and recovery.

Panel & Infrastructure (DCD)

Yes. For IONOS Cloud environments, we record the existing DCD configuration and take over agreed changes to servers, NICs, LANs, storage, and firewall rules. Changes are documented and production changes include a rollback path.

We assess existing IONOS and former 1&1 servers by product, management access, operating system, and support status. If safe ongoing operations are no longer reasonable, we define a time-limited upgrade or migration path.

Yes. We operate Linux on suitable IONOS VPS, Cloud Cubes, Cloud Servers, and Dedicated Servers. Because management, networking, and resource models differ by product, we confirm the exact scope after a technical audit.

Yes. We can integrate IONOS Object Storage for suitable backup, archive, or application data. Whether S3-compatible object storage fits the specific use case is assessed in advance.

Security & Compliance

We align provider-side firewall rules, the local Linux firewall, and administrative access. Depending on the target architecture, non-public services can be reached through VPN, a bastion, or private networks.

IONOS offers locations in Germany. We document the selected location, subprocessors, access paths and technical measures, and provide a DPA for our part of the service. Whether the overall setup complies with the GDPR and sector-specific requirements must be assessed for the specific use case.

Where IONOS Cloud Backup is part of the environment, we configure and monitor the agreed plans. A separate backup target can be used instead. Frequency, retention, recovery tests, and recovery objectives are defined in scope.

Container & Kubernetes

Yes. With IONOS Managed Kubernetes, IONOS operates the agreed provider components. WZ-IT can cover node pools, add-ons, networking, storage, GitOps, and workloads under a separately defined Kubernetes scope.

Yes. We install and harden the Docker engine, set up Docker Compose setups and handle log management. We ensure containers automatically start on reboot.

Operations & Support

No. Wherever possible, we use a separate technical user and dedicated SSH keys with only the rights required for the scope. Access and emergency procedures are documented during onboarding.

Yes. Your servers, contracts, and invoices remain in your IONOS account. WZ-IT receives the required technical access and takes over only the systems and operating duties documented in the agreement.

Monitoring-only starts at €79.90 net per customer environment and month; alerts go to your team. Management of an existing Linux server starts at €149.90 net per month. Exact scope and incident response depend on the audit and selected service level. Progressive volume pricing applies to further servers in one coherent environment.

Yes. We assess CPU, memory, I/O, network, operating system, and application behavior. This determines whether configuration, storage, server class, or the application should change. Changes require a backup, maintenance plan, and tested rollback path.

Yes. We inventory AWS dependencies, data volumes, networking, availability, and recovery targets and design an appropriate IONOS target architecture. Test migration, cutover, and rollback are planned for the project.

For regular operations, we primarily support Debian, Ubuntu LTS, AlmaLinux, and Rocky Linux. Other or end-of-life systems are assessed for maintainability, vendor support, and an upgrade path before takeover.

Our focus is clearly on Linux. If you have a pure Windows environment, we're not the right partner. However, in hybrid setups (Windows AD + Linux web server) we professionally manage the Linux part and connect it to your AD.

We plan Proxmox on suitable IONOS dedicated infrastructure as a separate architecture scope. Hardware, remote access, networking, additional addresses, backup, and restart procedures must be assessed before installation.

Emergency & SLA

The procedure depends on the IONOS product and agreed architecture. We first distinguish provider incidents from guest operating-system or application failures, open required IONOS tickets, and execute the documented recovery steps.

Yes, for P1 incidents in Production within 60 minutes and Critical within 30 minutes including callback. Other priorities and service levels follow their respective service windows. For provider incidents, we coordinate escalation to IONOS within the agreed operating scope.
