Backup target and location
A dedicated PBS instance per customer at a site in Germany, separate from your source. A second site for the offsite copy is named in the offer.
Capacity and retention
Sizing by data volume, change rate and retention, with reserve for growth.

Rent Proxmox Backup Server: PBS Hosting
Operation of a Proxmox Backup Server as an addition to your Proxmox environment: a separate backup target at a second site, with sync, verify, monitoring and recovery by WZ-IT. The offer is aimed mainly at environments WZ-IT already looks after; other environments on request.
Starting point
A backup at the same site is not enough
The 3-2-1 rule asks for several copies on different media and at least one in a different location. For Proxmox that means: a local PBS needs an external target with separate access.
Loss of the site
Fire, power failure or theft hit the production system and the local backup at once. Only a copy at another location survives that.
Access to the backups
Ransomware and compromised administrator accounts delete backups too if the target uses the same credentials as the source.
Recovery without proof
A successful sync job does not show that data, key and application come back. Only a restore proves that.
Architecture
From the local backup to a separate target
The hosted PBS is the second copy. With pull sync the external PBS fetches the backups itself; the production environment has no credentials for the target and cannot delete anything there. Alternatively the source pushes. Which direction fits depends on your environment.
Local PBS
Proxmox VE backs up VMs and containers to a local PBS in your production environment. That is the fast path for everyday cases such as an accidentally deleted system.
Hosted PBS
A standalone PBS at a second site with separate access, its own retention and monitoring. It holds the copy when the source and the local backup fail.
Restore and proof
Verify checks the integrity of stored data. Whether an application comes back is shown by an isolated restore with the released key.
Encryption and pull sync limit access paths but do not replace deletion protection. Permissions, retention and protection of the target administration are set separately.
PBS offsite architectureScope
Who does what
The offer states what is provided and which tasks lie with WZ-IT and which with you. There is no standard package with fixed content.
Sync, verify and maintenance
Setup and monitoring of sync jobs, prune, garbage collection and verify as well as PBS updates.
Monitoring and fault handling
Alerts for failed jobs and low capacity; service hours and response follow the agreed service level, as in managed operations.
Source and credentials
Your Proxmox environment and local PBS stay in your hands, as does the release of access and permissions.
Key and approvals
The encryption key stays with you alone, WZ-IT keeps no copy. Without the key no recovery is possible, so it should additionally be secured separately.
Infrastructure, subscription and operations are shown separately in the offer. Specific recovery objectives need an explicit agreement.
Cost
What determines the price
There is no published flat price for PBS hosting because data volume and operating scope vary widely. The offer shows these items separately:
| Factor | What determines it | What the offer states |
|---|---|---|
| Data volume and change rate | Used storage after deduplication, daily change, growth | Booked and usable capacity, measure, reserve and extra cost with growth |
| Retention | Number and duration of kept snapshots | Retention rules, prune and garbage collection cadence |
| Location and second copy | Distance to the source, further sites | Location of each copy and spatial separation |
| Operations and service level | Service hours, response, scope of monitoring | Included tasks, limits and service tier |
| Subscription | Chosen PBS vendor tier per server and year | Separate item; available through WZ-IT as Authorized Reseller |
| Setup and takeover | Sizing, installation, permissions, key storage, first sync | One-time item within the agreed scope |
| Restore test | Scope and target system of the test | Separate item, bookable at a fixed price (see restore test) |
Fit
Who PBS hosting fits
Fits
If you look for a supervised external target
- A Proxmox environment that WZ-IT already looks after and that should add PBS operations
- A Proxmox environment that lacks an external backup target with responsible operations
- An existing PBS that should sync to a second site
- The wish for a proven recovery path instead of a green job
Fits less
If another route is closer
- Plain storage space without operations: a storage box or S3 is enough then, responsibility stays with you
- Self-operation wanted: the setup instructions are in the PBS guide
- Immutable copies (WORM) as a must: PBS has no WORM mode, clarify the requirement beforehand
Process
From the enquiry to the first restore
- 01
Enquiry and inventory
You name source environment, data volume, change rate, retention and goals. We clarify unknown values in a conversation.
- 02
Offer
It sets scope, location, responsibilities, service level and the separate cost items.
- 03
Setup
Provisioning the PBS, access, permissions, key storage and sync jobs.
- 04
First sync and verify
The first sync transfers the data; verify checks the integrity of the copy.
- 05
Restore and acceptance
An isolated restore confirms the path, where agreed as a test.
- 06
Operations
Monitoring, maintenance and fault handling run under the agreed service level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most important questions
- Yes, as an addition to your Proxmox environment: WZ-IT operates the PBS as a separate backup target within an agreed scope. The offer is aimed mainly at customers WZ-IT already looks after; other environments are possible on request. Scope, location and operations are set before the order.
- There is no published flat price. Costs depend on data volume and change rate, retention, location and second copy, and the agreed operations and service level. Subscription and setup are shown separately.
- A dedicated PBS instance per customer with separate access, operated within the agreed scope. Capacity, retention and responsibilities are set by the offer, not by a standard package.
- Not necessarily. A local PBS for fast restores plus an external one as a second copy is usual. Syncing from an existing PBS also works; whether backing up directly from Proxmox VE makes sense is clarified in the initial conversation.
- In Germany. WZ-IT's managed Proxmox hosting runs in data centres in Germany; a booked offsite PBS sits at a second site that the offer names.
- The key stays with you alone, WZ-IT keeps no copy. With client-side encryption it decides whether backups are readable; without it no recovery is possible. It should therefore additionally be secured separately.
- No. Separate access and sync permissions limit access paths. Deletion rights, retention and protection of the target administration must be checked additionally; PBS has no WORM mode.
- Within the agreed operating scope WZ-IT monitors sync, verify and capacity and handles faults. Service hours and response follow the agreed service level, as in managed operations (Essential to Critical).
- The term follows WZ-IT's managed Proxmox hosting. The details are in the offer.
- Not automatically. A documented restore test is a separate item and can be combined with PBS hosting (restore test at a fixed price). A successful sync or verify job is not a complete functional test of an application.
- PBS is open source and usable without a subscription. For production systems WZ-IT recommends a paid tier, which can be obtained through WZ-IT as Authorized Reseller. The Community tier is meant for non-production environments.
Reviews & projects
Proxmox proof from real projects
Customer feedback on virtualization, backup, VPN, security and ongoing cluster operations.
WZ-IT moved our studio infrastructure from decentralised individual devices to a central platform: every site is securely connected via VPN, new devices are onboarded automatically and an entire site is provisioned from a template, without manual steps on location. What impressed me most is the breadth and depth of their knowledge: Timo and Robin are not a typical IT provider who sets up a server and leaves. The two of them think their way into highly complex infrastructure and software topics, work through every requirement we put in front of them, and build networking, provisioning and operations so that everything fits together in the end. WZ-IT is an excellent partner for complex software, network and architecture projects.
