Starting point

The database runs, but nobody is responsible

In many companies, the database was set up once and has been running along ever since. The risks show when space, version or recovery become an issue.

  • Version without security updates

Each PostgreSQL major version is maintained for five years. After that there are no more fixes, and the upgrade gets harder every year.

  • Only a nightly dump

One dump per night means up to a day of data loss. Point-in-time recovery narrows this gap to the time since the last archived log file.

  • Slow queries without a known cause

Missing indexes, bloated tables or a default configuration slow down the application.

  • Knowledge held by one person

Often only one employee or a former contractor knows how replication and recovery work.

Services

Scope of database operations

Six building blocks for PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB; the proposal sets out which apply. Not included: application code and data model, Oracle and SQL Server, cloud provider database services.

Maintain
  • Updates

Minor updates in the agreed maintenance window, after reviewing the release notes.

  • Version upgrades

Planned major version upgrades with testing, a rollback plan and an agreed time window.

Protect
  • Backup and PITR

Base backup plus WAL archive (PostgreSQL) or binary log (MySQL, MariaDB), restores tested.

  • Replication

Setup and monitoring of replicas, documented failover procedure.

Monitor and improve
  • 24/7 monitoring

Availability, connections, disk space, replication lag, backup status; response to P1 incidents by service level.

  • Basic performance care

Analyse slow queries, recommend indexes, tune configuration, maintain VACUUM (PostgreSQL) and statistics.

Process

How we take over your database

Four steps from the first look to ongoing operations.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Version, size, configuration, backup, replication and application dependencies.

  2. 02

    Backup first

Before we change anything, a tested backup with point-in-time recovery is in place.

  3. 03

    Monitoring and documentation

Connection to 24/7 monitoring, runbooks for recovery and failover.

  4. 04

    Ongoing operations

Updates, upgrades and basic performance care at the agreed frequency, with a report.

Pricing

Price by database and service level

Single server or cluster, replication, the number and size of databases and the desired service level determine the scope. We state the price in the proposal after the assessment. Individual tasks such as an upgrade are possible at the support rate of €120 excl. VAT / hour.

Comparison

Database operations or database hosting

Both routes lead to a managed database. The difference is where it runs and who owns the infrastructure.

Networking & Provisioning

WZ-IT moved our studio infrastructure from decentralised individual devices to a central platform: every site is securely connected via VPN, new devices are onboarded automatically and an entire site is provisioned from a template, without manual steps on location. What impressed me most is the breadth and depth of their knowledge: Timo and Robin are not a typical IT provider who sets up a server and leaves. The two of them think their way into highly complex infrastructure and software topics, work through every requirement we put in front of them, and build networking, provisioning and operations so that everything fits together in the end. WZ-IT is an excellent partner for complex software, network and architecture projects.
