Answers to the most important questions
Duration depends on your infrastructure complexity. Small setups can be migrated in 1-2 weeks. Complex environments with Kapsule/Kosmos Kubernetes and multiple databases need 3-6 weeks.
Scaleway offers free K8s control plane with Kapsule/Kosmos. On Hetzner this is replaced by K3s, Nomad or Docker Swarm. For simpler setups we recommend Coolify as a PaaS alternative.
Scaleway is already affordable (~€30/month for 4vCPU/8GB), but Hetzner offers ~63% lower prices (~€11). Plus: 2.5x higher bandwidth (1 Gbit/s vs 400 Mbit/s), German company for better GDPR compliance.
Scaleway has strong serverless offerings (Functions, Containers, Jobs). These are migrated to Docker containers on Hetzner. With Coolify or OpenFaaS you keep event-driven workflows – without vendor lock-in.
Scaleway offers Paris, Amsterdam and Warsaw. Hetzner focuses on Germany (Nuremberg, Falkenstein) and Finland (Helsinki). For GDPR-focused companies, a German company is often preferable.
Scaleway Object Storage is migrated to Hetzner Object Storage (both S3-compatible). With rclone or s3cmd, data can be seamlessly synchronized. Usually an endpoint change in your application is sufficient.
Scaleway limits port speed to 400 Mbit/s despite unlimited traffic. Hetzner offers 1 Gbit/s – 2.5x faster. For traffic-intensive applications this makes a significant difference.
Scaleway Cockpit is replaced by the Prometheus + Grafana stack. We set this up completely on Hetzner – with full control and no additional costs.
