Answers to the most important questions
Duration depends on your infrastructure complexity. Small setups can be migrated in 1-2 weeks. Complex environments with LKE and multiple NodeBalancers need 3-6 weeks.
Linode LKE is replaced with K3s, Nomad or Docker Swarm on Hetzner. K3s is a lightweight Kubernetes distribution that is perfect for Hetzner. For simpler setups we recommend Coolify as PaaS.
Linode (~$20/month for 4GB) is now part of Akamai. Hetzner offers ~39% lower prices (~€11), 5x more traffic (20TB vs 4TB), German company for GDPR compliance, and no risk of enterprise price increases.
Linode (Akamai) offers global presence with 13+ regions. Hetzner focuses on Germany and Finland. For EU-focused companies this is perfectly sufficient and offers better GDPR compliance with a German company.
Linode offers Managed Services for ~$100/month extra. At WZ-IT we offer comparable support included – monitoring, updates, backups and 24/7 availability for critical issues.
Linode Object Storage is migrated to Hetzner Object Storage (both S3-compatible). With rclone or s3cmd, data can be seamlessly synchronized. Usually an endpoint change in your application is sufficient.
Yes! Linode includes only 4TB traffic, then $0.005/GB. Hetzner offers 20TB included at 1 Gbit/s – that's 5x more traffic. For traffic-intensive applications this is a significant cost advantage.
Linode was acquired by Akamai in 2022. This brings benefits like CDN integration, but also risks like enterprise price increases. Migration to Hetzner offers long-term price stability with an independent German provider.
