A VMware exit needs a target that fits the existing estate. The Virtualisation Exit Check evaluates the path to Proxmox and separates analysis from implementation.
VMware environments have different dependencies. A VM may boot while vendor approval, backup methods or a network capability are missing on the target. Start with applications and operational ownership. This overview supports a decision with a feature comparison; it is no commitment to operate all the platforms listed.

Four alternatives and their roles
| Target | Role | Check before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| Proxmox VE | KVM VMs and LXC, cluster management with integrated storage and backup ecosystem | guest approvals, storage design, quorum, backup and operations |
| Microsoft Hyper-V | virtualisation in the Windows Server ecosystem | Windows licensing, management, cluster and backup integration |
| XCP-ng | Xen-based virtualisation with Xen Orchestra for management and backups | guest support, storage, operating tools and support path |
| Nutanix AHV | virtualisation within the Nutanix platform | platform scope, hardware/software compatibility and existing integrations |
This table does not claim that one platform is universally cheaper or faster. Check licensing and vendor approvals for the specific products. Proxmox vs VMware develops the Proxmox path; XCP-ng vs Proxmox distinguishes the open platforms.
Feature comparison: what replaces which VMware function
The table maps functions VMware environments commonly use to the counterparts in the alternatives. It is based on the vendors' product pages; feature scope and licence tiers change with releases and must be checked for the target version.
| VMware function | Proxmox VE | Hyper-V | XCP-ng | Nutanix AHV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Management (vCenter) | Web-based management on every node (multi-master), CLI and REST API | Windows Admin Center, Hyper-V Manager, System Center VMM | Xen Orchestra (web UI, API, CLI) | Prism (HTML5 console) |
| High availability | HA Manager with watchdog-based fencing | Failover Clustering | Pools; check the HA scope in the XCP-ng documentation | Automatic VM restart on other hosts |
| vMotion | Live migration between nodes | Live migration, also without shared storage (shared nothing) | Migration between hosts | Live migration without interruption |
| Storage (vSAN, VMFS) | ZFS, LVM, Ceph RBD, CephFS, NFS, iSCSI, SMB | Storage Spaces Direct, SAN (iSCSI, Fibre Channel), SMB 3.0 | Depends on storage repository; XOSTOR as its own solution | Nutanix Distributed Storage Fabric |
| Networking (NSX) | SDN with VLAN, QinQ, VXLAN and BGP-EVPN, distributed firewall | VLANs, virtual switches, SDN | Pool networking in Xen Orchestra | Flow with microsegmentation |
| Backup | vzdump, Proxmox Backup Server, live restore | Hyper-V Replica, backup software | Agentless backup through Xen Orchestra | Built-in replication (asynchronous and synchronous) |
| Migration tool from VMware | Import wizard for ESXi | Conversion tool or backup/restore | V2V import in Xen Orchestra | Nutanix Move |
| Licence and procurement | AGPLv3, subscription optional | Included in Windows Server (Datacenter: unlimited Windows VM rights) | Open source, support through Vates | AHV included only in the Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure purchase |

Which alternative fits when
| Starting point | Obvious target | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly Linux guests, open-source operation wanted, own operations team or service provider | Proxmox VE | Guest approvals, storage design (ZFS or Ceph), quorum, backup |
| Mostly Windows guests, Windows Server licences and Active Directory in place | Hyper-V | Licence scope (Datacenter), cluster and backup integration, management |
| Xen know-how or Citrix background, management through Xen Orchestra wanted | XCP-ng | Guest support, storage, support path through Vates |
| Turnkey hyperconverged platform with vendor support and budget | Nutanix AHV | Total platform cost, hardware compatibility, tie to NCI |
| Few VMs, simple requirements | Proxmox VE or Hyper-V | Operational responsibility, backup, recovery |
The choice follows from the applications and the operating model, not from a ranking of platforms. Where several targets fit, recovery objectives, existing know-how and five-year total cost decide. The virtualization exit check applies this decision to your environment for Proxmox.
Free ESXi alternative and Broadcom contract
When looking for a VMware replacement following the Broadcom acquisition, start with your own renewal quotation and usage terms. This comparison assumes neither a universal price increase nor a particular VMware licensing model. A freely usable hypervisor does not mean cost-free target operations: hardware, backup, updates and operational ownership remain separate items.
Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualisation platform; its subscription model adds repository and support services. An ESXi alternative does not automatically replace vCenter, vSAN, NSX or application-specific integrations. Check the functions in use and approvals individually. Actual contract quotations must be current.
The VMware exit strategy with business-case template structures full costs and the exit decision. The migration checklist records technical prerequisites and blockers.
Criteria for an exit decision
- Applications: inventory guest systems, appliances and vendor approvals. Technical compatibility and application support are separate checks.
- Data and storage: identify local and shared volumes, database consistency, recovery time and data-loss objectives.
- Networking and security: map VLANs, firewalls, identities, passthrough and special integrations separately.
- Backup and restore: perform a restore test. An existing backup file does not establish that recovery works.
- Operating model: document ownership, updates, monitoring, vendor escalation and the ability to leave the target.
For Windows guests, Windows Server licensing is a separate decision factor. Do not assume existing licences transfer without review.
Assess a VMware alternative: The Virtualisation Exit Check reviews inventory, Proxmox target and switching risks. Migration is commissioned separately.
From comparison to migration plan
Target selection precedes rehearsal, acceptance, migration waves, write boundaries and rollback. The VMware migration guide covers implementation on Proxmox. WZ-IT plans and implements this path; this does not imply an offer to operate XCP-ng, Hyper-V or Nutanix continuously.
From comparison to implementation: Virtualisation Exit Check for planning, VMware migration for implementation. Arrange a discussion.
For authorities, the assessment of public-sector Proxmox deployments complements technical selection.
